Tasty Places :: La Vida Cantina

It is finished. And that means that I’m just beginning again. I finished my half marathon on Sunday and I did so without my knee exploding or falling off. And this means that training for the (full) Los Angeles Marathon is back on. Yay.

Can you feel the enthusiasm?

I do this. Groan when I’m ailing – bemoaning the pain, jealous of those jogging the parks, the sidewalks as I drive; but lazy, hopelessly tired when well; full of gripes. But if running were easy, I suppose everyone would do it.

A big motivator for these runs – in addition to the heavy medals we get after crossing the finish line – is food. I eat plenty of it while training, and always enjoy a hearty meal after one of these big races. Sunday’s Surf City Marathon was no exception, three of my favorite homies heading to Costa Mesa with me to replenish and refuel after 13.1 grueling miles.

It was a first half marathon for my friends Sandy (aka the work wife) and Julio, both of whom survived and are hungry for another medal (OC is up next in the Beach Cities Challenge). Our friend Kristina, Julio’s partner Gil (who brought a congratulatory cake from 85 Degrees), and two of our kids met us at our restaurant of refuge, La Vida Cantina at The Triangle. I admit that what kept me going on Sunday was knowing that, eventually, I’d have my lips wrapped ’round a straw, sipping a salty-sweet margarita post-race. Maybe my runner’s high was still kicking in; maybe it was my beloved company; but I have to say that my experience at La Vida was one of the best I’ve had in a while.

The service was part of this. Perhaps we got lucky, but our waiter (didn’t catch his name) charmed us; treated us to fabulous service. Funny and responsive, he and the rest of the crew made us feel comfortable and welcome.

We also enjoyed the setting, our seats outside The Triangle’s rooftop patio. You can’t beat a SoCal February, the temperature a idyllic 70 degrees. I could have chilled there all afternoon, and probably would have had it not been Super Bowl Sunday and in a hurry to get home (more for the commercials, though I crashed and missed the entire first half). If close to home, La Vida would be a definite “kick it” spot, especially on Sundays for their brunch, the “B” word bringing me to a third reason for my La Vida love…

Their food! Both sumptuous and reasonably priced. Those who know me are aware of my fondness for enchiladas suizas, especially from Los Compadres – all other suizas are compared to theirs. This is what I ordered at La Vida, and I have to say that their version held up pretty well to LC’s; not as creamy but with more fire to them. Don’t know if I can really compare, truthfully. The La Vida suizas certainly satisfied and left me wanting more. And their margarita delighted me; made me forget about my heavy fatigue, my pain (while not acute as it had been, my knee still gave me a little trouble). Lesson learned here, La Vida Cantina is a wonderful go-to spot after a race, and anytime. If it weren’t so far away, I’d designate it as my crashing spot after LA. I have a feeling however that, after 26 miles, I will stop, drop, and eat at the first alcohol-serving hole-in-the-wall I’m able to find near the finish line. But thank you, La Vida Cantina, for treating us to a wonderful time after Surf City!

Tasty Places :: Los Compadres

My conversion to Los Compadres lover was a slow one. I was not a fan when I first began going a few years ago – forced to go because people at work insisted on picking the Anaheim Street locale for birthday lunches. Each time this came as the choice, I’d roll my eyes but go along, ordering a quesadilla.

Thinking back, I’m not sure what my problem was with the place. Mexican food is my favorite, their chips and salsa are like crack, their affordable lunch specials come with a fountain drink, and they’re generally fast. So why the hesitation to fall in love? Maybe I was just playing hard to get.

I’m sure I don’t have to explain that, eventually, I fell. And fell hard. And without realizing it. I’m guessing my reversal began the day I first ordered the #13 – Chicken Enchiladas Suizas. Since trying these, I’ve searched ever since for a sauce as good – creamy and rich, the roasted tomatillos providing a zingy zest – but I’ve failed (though the now closed Diego at the MGM Grand came close). This is by far my favorite plate of Mexican food in my little world. I do my enchiladas with double beans, as their frijoles are just the right texture, have a nice bite, and offer lots of flavor.

It’s still the birthday spot, but I don’t mind. Really, no one minds – even if we were just there two days before for a regular ol’ normal lunch. What I’ve not yet done is visit during Happy Hour, a goal I plan to tackle this holiday season when I have some time off. In the meantime, I’ll keep my visits prime time, ordering my #13 over and over again.

Tasty Places :: Panvimarn

Panvimarn is a popular local spot that I JUST enjoyed for the very first time today. JUST.

It’s certainly worthy of a mention on this here little blog even though I was only equipped with my iPhone 4s for photos* (then again, that’s the case for a lot of my posts so, no excuse). It’s incredible that I’ve never been here despite the fact that I pass it 10 times a week shuttling my kid to and from practices, a line meandering out from the front door – people anxious to get their Panvimarn on.

As much of a restaurant skank as I am, I don’t get around much on the Thai side. But everyone raves about Panvimarn, always running a close second to Los Compadres with my co-workers as the favorite lunch place.

Tom Yum soup

I started by stealing a slurp of someone’s Tom Yum soup, a refreshing and zesty broth with a slight lemony tang with shrimp and mushrooms. One slurp didn’t prove to be enough. Luckily, that someone was kin enough to share more of her Tom Yum with me.

My entree was the Pad Thai Special, a dish that (as a Pad Thai novice) seemed perfectly cooked – balanced in flavor and texture, not too spicy. It was so good that I had to write about it (here).

Beyond the food, the styling was impressive, reminding me that LBC really does have some restaurants that can transport you and thrill you and elate you.

Panvimarn is a an affordable lunch choice (we went today to celebrate William’s 27th birthday – with tax, tip, and my contribution to his lunch, I left the place only $16 lighter) and a great social venue as well. I wouldn’t mind winding (or wining) down after work there with my girls. Or on the weekend with the hub.

NOT Pad Thai - I wasn't paying attention - something with beef

So now I get it and when the announcement is made in our suite that a decision has been made to go to Panvimarn for lunch, I will no longer bow out blaming my diet or complain of how broke I am and that I should be saving my money (isn’t eating out what credit cards were made for?). I will say yes to Panvimarn. And maybe I’ll even venture outside the Pad Thai box.
